London, England. An artist with intellectual skills is John Legend, who studied English with a major in African American literature at the University of Pennsylvania. In college, he participated in a jazz group called Counterparts and at the time was introduced to singer Lauryn Hill, playing piano on the track 'Everything Is Everything' from the singer's first solo album. He finished college in 1999 and began composing his own songs; Recorded two independent albums that were sold in their performances: 'John Stephens' (2000) and 'Live at Jimmy Uptown' (2001).
