At the slum, Sidney and Geordie identify the girl as Sadie Parker, and meet her shocked roommates Ava, Lottie and Peggy. Although they claim to be seamstresses, Geordie realises they're involved in a life of vice. Sidney finds his missing jacket in Sadie's room, realising he gave it to her the night before. They track down the owner and employer of the girls, Mr Simpson, who is playing golf with councilman Archer Davis. Sidney's frustration with his own failings bubbles over into an angry confrontation with Simpson. As Geordie's investigation leads him to Simpson's nightclub, Sidney attempts to atone for his failings – and both men, in their own way, begin to help the downtrodden women of the slum find their voice.
